This is how death works in AoC.

Character death imposes a slight temporary ability score penalty on the player and raises their soul corruption. Different classes gain more corruption from death, and can even gain it from powerful spells and abilities.
If a character with full soul corruption dies, you are "respawned" in hell. You then have to fight your way out.

In AoC, your penalty for dieing is FIGHTING YOUR FUCKING WAY OUT OF HELL

I cannot describe how awsome that is. From forum rumor and dev talk, its 100% single player and tuned to character lvl and class. Appearently, there is also a way to enter hell manually, via high level Herald of Xotli or Necromancer spell.
